Takumi Clothing
Philosophy
Takumi is the japanese word for artisan.
All of Takumi's clothes are handcrafted in Japan by artisans who seek perfection in the smallest details.
Our purpose is to create clothes that give our consumers an opportunity to express their unique style and personality.
You can see and feel the quality in the details.
Simple beauty that is not mass produced.
These clothes have an individuality and character that you can feel.
History
While living and working in Asia, we developed a strong appreciation and love for Japanese design. Japanese designs tend to be simple but functional. Their artisans take great care in obtaining perfection in details.
On one of our trips to Japan, we met a group of textile artisans who were creating a vintage-type denim using traditional wooden looms. This slow process had been abandoned in the US and Europe in favor of increased efficiency and throughput.
We made some jeans with this denim and the results were amazing. These jeans were strong, beautiful and comfortable.
Because of the traditional weaving process, each pair has a unique quality. The jeans have a simple vintage design and are made with only the highest quality natural materials down to the smallest level of detail.
At that point, we knew that we had to bring these amazing clothes to market.
Logo
The Takumi logo depicts a japanese shrine guard lion.
Japanese shrine guard lions symbolize power, success and strength.
Statues of Japanese guard lions are traditionally placed in front of Shinto shrines in Japan to ward off evil spirits.
Designer
The line’s designer and president Luis Pedroza was born in Taiwan of Japanese, Chinese and Mexican heritage.
Luis studied in California at the University of Southern California.
Over the last decade, Luis has lived and worked throughout Asia and Central Europe as a regional Marketing Director.
In 2006, Luis created the Takumi concept. All pieces are produced in small numbers, handcrafted in Japan and influenced by Luis’ time abroad and his passion for Japanese and American clothing and textile traditions.
Japanese Textiles
The art of Japanese luxury textiles can be traced back to 5th century kimono makers who were commissioned by the Imperial family to produce luxury fabrics for court nobles.
Throughout much of Japan's history, Japanese have communicated their social status through their clothing fabric.
Today, Japan is known for producing some of the finest luxury textiles in the world. Artisans draw on a rich textile tradition combining ancestral techniques with modern tools and technologies.
Japanese Denim
Our selvedge (selvage) jeans are made from denim woven on
old style shuttle looms like the one pictured here. American
and European manufacturers had abandoned this slower and
more costly method 40 years ago in favor of faster, more
efficient projectile looms.
However, denim made on an antique loom is woven stronger
and has unique qualities that become more beautiful with wear.
